The Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association (ASSCA) is a nonprofit partnership established in 1968 that fosters a vibrant, enduring relationship between Austin, Texas, USA and Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico.
Mission & Scope
ASSCA cultivates cross-border connections across a wide range of areas:
- Cultural exchanges: Hosting and promoting events like Saltillo Day in Austin and Austin Day in Saltillo
- Educational initiatives: Facilitating academic partnerships between institutions like Austin Community College and Universidad Tecnológica de Coahuila
- Economic collaboration: Supporting business ventures, including establishing a landing pad office for Austin businesses exploring Mexican markets.
- Arts and public projects: Sponsoring public art installations, community events, and cultural programming.
Activities & Highlights
- Saltillo Day: A celebrated festival in Austin’s Plaza Saltillo, showcasing Mexican craftsmanship, cuisine, music, and more.
- Austin Day in Saltillo: Since 2017, Saltillo has hosted its own tribute to Austin, promoting goodwill and shared cultural appreciation.
Significant milestones: In 2018, the cities marked their 50th anniversary with ceremonies including the presentation of Austin’s keys to Saltillo’s mayor—a symbol of their mutual respect and unity.
